The Board meets monthly throughout the year. Its meetings are scheduled and
announced in advance. Several non-board members serve on standing
committees. Effective independent school trusteeship is both a
challenging and rewarding endeavor. Interested parents and friends are
encouraged to contact the Head of School for more information.Each
trustee takes on the obligation of active support for the institution,
for the leadership of the Head of School, and for independent
education. Standing committees have been established to help trustees
achieve these goals. Standing committees of the Board of Trustees are
as follows:- Athletic Committee
- This
committee reviews all policies involving the implementation and
establishment of the sports program at SPS. It is also responsible for
maintaining a booster program to provide financial support for athletic
teams and physical education programs.
- Buildings and Grounds Committee
- This
committee is charged with ensuring that the existing physical campus is
safe, meets all codes, and is adequate for the needs of the School. The
Committee also works with the Head of School and the Facilities
Director to determine priorities in routine maintenance and renovations.
- Development Committee
- This
committee is responsible for overseeing the development program and
assuming a leadership role for fundraising. Each year, this committee
works closely with a group of volunteers in directing the Annual Giving
Campaign. The Committee also coordinates Capital Campaigns authorized
by the Board of Trustees to fund expansion of school facilities and
endowment.
- Endowment Committee
- This
committee monitors investment of the School’s endowed funds. It also
recommends investment strategies and policies, and it assures that
restricted income is used solely for that purpose. Use of any and all
funds generated by the Endowment must be approved by the Board of
Trustees.
- Executive Committee
- This
committee is made up of the officers of the Board of Trustees and works
closely with the Head of School throughout the academic year in a
consulting capacity.
- Finance Committee
- The
Executive Committee Treasurer and the other members of this committee
are charged with ensuring the sound financial condition of the School.
The Committee approves and recommends the annual operating budget to
the Board of Trustees, and it meets monthly to analyze monthly income
and operating expenses in relation to the annual budget. The Committee
also reviews major expenditures and works with the Director of Business
and Finance in preparation for the annual audit. The Committee may
delegate some responsibilities to subcommittees.
- Marketing Committee
- This
committee works closely with the School, helping to heighten public
awareness. The Committee also assists the Development and Admissions
Offices with advertising, public relations, promotional events and
recruitment.
- Strategic Long-Range Planning Committee
- This
committee is charged with reviewing and updating our mission statement,
by-laws, articles of incorporation, long-range plan and admissions
goals.
- Student Programs Committee
- This committee meets regularly to review all aspects of the School’s curriculum and instructional practices.
- Technology Committee
- This
committee reviews policies and programs to ensure that technology is
integrated into the curriculum. Working with the Head of School and the
Technology Director, the Committee will validate the School’s
technology plan, evaluate its progress, and review professional
development efforts.
- Trustees Committee
- This
committee is charged with providing a slate of candidates for board
nomination, evaluating the board’s annual performance, coordinating the
cultivation of new trustees, formulating the board profile,
coordinating recruitment of non-board members to board committees,
overseeing the trustee orientation process, and nominating board
officers.
