Middle School
Grades 6 through 8

In middle school, students utilize the study and organizational skills learned in Lower School in navigating the challenging curriculum. Advanced classes in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and French or Spanish are supplemented by classes in health and informed decision making, physical education, art, technology, and music. Teachers emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, study skills, hands-on activities, and cooperative projects. As part of the college preparatory mission, semester exams are given in winter and spring. Standardized tests are administered and used to measure scholastic growth.

Frequent field trips to local cultural events bring new dimensions to learning. Excursions include a week long hiking and camping mountain expedition, and a weekend at Sea Camp in the Florida Keys. These activities reinforce the goal of Middle School – to foster scholastic attitudes that build discipline and responsibility while encouraging curiosity and respecting the individuality of each child. Professionals from different areas of expertise visit the campus to enrich class studies and inspire students to investigate new worlds of opportunity. Each Middle School student is assigned to a small advisory group led by a faculty member or administrator. Groups meet informally each week to discuss a variety of academic and social issues. Advisors then communicate with teachers and parents to keep them informed about each student’s progress.
