Middle School
Foreign Language

Foreign language instruction in middle school is a required daily course. Both French and Spanish are offered. The purpose of these courses is to develop a structure for future instruction and an ability to communicate in a second language. Students choosing Spanish are placed in one of two levels of instruction based on their past exposure to the language. Both levels complete a high school Spanish I curriculum.
French - Grades 6, 7, and 8
The study of French begins in sixth grade and continues through eighth grade. The purpose of this course is to develop oral and written communication skills in the French language and to familiarize students with the culture of French-spreaking nations.
The process of learning a language involves four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The study of French gives attention to these skills with special emphasis placed upon speaking. Vocabulary, grammar, and idiomatic expressions are learned. Correct pronunciation and oral communication are balanced by a structural study which allows students to use the language creatively. Audio tapes, video tapes, computer programs, and a language laboratory provide students numerous opportunities to practice.
French as a "living language" is emphasized through study of the culture of French-speaking nations. Books, slides, videos, and music are utilized for these presentations. French students complete a high school French I curriculum.
Spanish - Grades 6, 7, and 8
These courses develop competency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Students learn to perform a variety of functions and to perform them accurately. The tasks are to list, to ask questions, to describe, to give and follow directions, to narrate, to express opinions and defend them, and to hypothesize. Students must be able to perform these tasks with accuracy. An appreciation of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and of the importance of Spanish in the world is developed. By eighth grade the emphasis is on sustained oral and written communication. Exposure to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries is continued.
