Middle School
Science

The science program provides an in-depth study of the branches of general science. The curriculum is laboratory based and strongly "hands-on." Correct experimental techniques and scientific analyses of data are a focus at each level. Quarterly projects, including a science fair experiment, promote individual curiosity and academic development.

Science - Grade 6
Earth science and a continuation of physical and biological science begun in the lower school are the introductory course in middle school. Students explore the earth's structure, movement, and changes above, below, and at its surface. Astronomy, oceanography, and geology are examined at this level.

Science - Grade 7
Life science examines the organization and function of living organisms. Beginning with the most simple virus and progressing through complex human organ systems, students are taught to classify based on both structure and life activities. Laboratory experience is investigative and includes microscopic and macroscopic examination of specimens. Development of vocabulary, current applications in science and technology, and reinforcement of advanced laboratory techniques are emphasized. Ecology, especially as it relates to a coastal community, is a special focus. The marine biology unit is enhanced by a four day trip to Sea Camp on Big Pine Island in the Florida Keys.

Science - Grade 8
Physical science is a laboratory-based investigation of the composition and behavior of matter. Basic concepts of chemistry, electricity, magnetism, motion, forces, and energy are introduced through lectures, projects, and experimentation. Strong emphasis is placed on refining the skills needed for an advanced secondary science curriculum. Current applications in science and technology are analyzed.
