Social Studies
 
The social studies department offers students a challenging program incorporating historical, geographical, and contemporary issues which encourages informed discussion and analytical writing. Content developed in class lectures and from assigned readings is used as a springboard to understand the dramatic themes highlighting the human experience on earth and responsibility in safeguarding the planet.
Social Studies - Grade 6
This course focuses on ancient peoples and civilizations. From hunters and gatherers to the elaborate Roman Empire, the development of human culture is discussed and analyzed. Geography and an understanding of the earth are important components of this journey into the past.
Social Studies - Grade 7
Civilization is traced from the collapse of the Roman Empire through the lands of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Americas, and Europe. Discussions include the foundations of Islam, feudal Japan and the Renaissance. Geography, analytical writing, and critical thinking are emphasized through the instructional media used in the classroom.
Social Studies - Grade 8
This course discusses U.S. History from 1800 to the present time. Issues are analyzed using source materials and a variety of projects and media tools. Geography continues to be taught as a key element influencing historical developments.
