Middle School
Art and Music

Art
The goals of the art program are to expose students to a great variety of art media and techniques so students can gain confidence in exploring their own creative potential. In gaining this confidence, students will acquire a better understanding of and appreciation for past and present cultures and the achievements of mankind in the art forms. Middle school students may also choose to participate each quarter in art elective courses.

Music
Saint Paul's uses the Orff Schuwerk learning approach to music in weekly music classes at all grade levels. Through the Orff method, students learn music by hearing and making the music first, then reading and writing it later. Students have the opportunity to play a wide variety of pitched, non-pitched and percussion instruments while developing critical listening skills that allow them to analyze different musical concepts. Music appreciation is also an important part of the curriculum, where students study not only classical composers but many contemporary composers as well.
